Greeting to lecturer and my fellow friends. Hereby I would like to present the fifth and also the last journal of ZT2253. This journal is about the sixth lecture we had attended on 24 august 2011. Today's lecture was different from previous lectures, which we were taught not based on lectures, but videos and also a few personality tests which are very interesting.
The first video had showed the changes of mindset in people from young to adult. When we were still young, we always look at this world with innocent eyes, what we see is always positive and beautiful things, we had the impression world is full of happiness and every story in this world can come to a happy ending. The world is full of good man; bad people for sure will receive their retribution, there is a very clear margin to differentiate between a good guy and a bad guy. We tend to trust other people and we were not being suspicious to strangers. We did not think much when we are asked to do something, and we easily become satisfied. However, things changed when we grown up. We start to look at the world differently. We questioned the reason why are we doing all the things we are doing right now. We are not satisfied with whatever we possessed now and we tend to ask for more. We became greedier. We fight less for the justice. Good and bad had now become in grey area, even if there's many injustice in the world going on, we did not do anything and let things passed just like that. We lost our passion and became passive. But no matter how, the world is still full of beautiful things if we can change our mindset. I think the purpose of the video is to show us how being demanding will make things complicated, and we can never get the feeling like when we were young back. I've realized that we shouldn't make things complicated, simple make us happier.
The second video had shown different kinds of personality. There are two types of major personalities, which is type A and type B personality. Generally, individual who possessed type A personality often being viewed as someone who is ambitious, aggressive, controlling, highly competitive, impatient, preoccupied with his or her status, time-conscious, and tightly-wound. They are always some high-achieving "workaholics" who multi-task, push themselves with deadlines, and hate both delays and ambivalence. On the other hand, type B people have perfect contrast to those with Type A personalities. They are generally patient, relaxed, easy-going, and at times lacking an overriding sense of urgency. Research showed that those with type A personality had a higher chance to get chronic disease such as hypertension, heat attack etc due to stress. Through this video, we know that we should always be moderate in our attitude, not to be too aggressive but not too relax as well. Balance is very important to maintain our healthy and efficient life. After the test, I found out that I am generally a type B person, because I tend to relax and do things according to my own pace. I am also patient enough to tolerate with the others when they do their things slow or they delay their work. But I think this bring disadvantages as well because it is harder to discipline the others to be more responsible when I myself isn't a very strict person. I've got friends who are type A too, and I think this test is really accurate because they are typically impatient and wanted to get works done very quickly. This also ensure their efficiency in work.
After the video, we were introduced to the personality test, which is based on the MBTI (Myer-Briggs Type Indicator). This indicator is designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. It is proposed by a group of people including Carl Jung, Katherine C. Briggs, and Isabel Briggs Myers. We must understand the concept before we go deeper. They proposed the fundamental theories which are rational functions and irrational functions. There are a few criteria in this indicator, which are Extraversion (E), Introversion (I), Sensing (S), Intuition (N), Thinking (T), Feeling (F), Judging (J) and also Perceiving (P). Every criterion has its own function to identify which personality we are having. We are asked to choose one of it only. As a result, there are as much as 16 different possible combination of personality by Jung, which is ESFP, ESTP, ISTJ, ISFJ, ENFP, ENTP, INFJ, INTJ, ESTJ, ENTJ, ISTP, INTP, ESFJ, ENFJ, INFP, and ISFP. For me, I am more towards thinking type of person, because I tend to remain quiet among the crowd, this more likely to provide me a chance to observe the other and think of the things people might not notice. This might create an impression that I am introvert, and I think Introversion suits me in certain degree too since I am quite a quiet person.
The third test we did is the test base on the Big Five Theory, OCEAN, which stands for Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism. These five traits can be summarized as below.
Openness – (inventive/curious vs. consistent/cautious). It is the appreciation for art, emotion, adventure, unusual ideas, curiosity, and variety of experience.
Conscientiousness – (efficient/organized vs. easy-going/careless). A tendency to show self-discipline, act dutifully, and aim for achievement; planned rather than spontaneous behavior.
Extraversion – (outgoing/energetic vs. solitary/reserved). People have the energy, positive emotions, assurgency, and the tendency to seek stimulation in the company of others.
Agreeableness – (friendly/compassionate vs. cold/unkind). This is a tendency for us to be compassionate and cooperative rather than suspicious and antagonistic towards others.
Neuroticism – (sensitive/nervous vs. secure/confident). This makes us more likely to experience unpleasant emotions easily, such as anger, anxiety, depression, or vulnerability.
I think this lecture is a fruitful one because I get to know myself at the end of the class, and discover my other side differently. I think this is how it should go in the future, because it is interesting and beneficial.
