First, I would like to define the definition of emotion and motivation. Emotion is defined by the effective tones and is classified as neutral, positive and negative. Motivation on the other hand is the driving force or the energizing momentum to someone to achieve something. Emotion therefore is closely related to motivation as emotion can alter the will of someone to do something, thus contributing to the motivation of that person to do something. For example, A is in love in B. therefore the feeling of love drives and motivates A do everything he can to woo B, like sending sms, showing concern, calling and others. However, not every motivation is driven by emotion. For example, in study, one studies really hard to achieve academic excellence but there is no feeling or emotion pushing that person. What is behind him is his will, support from the family members, teachers but I would say the determination or perseverance plays a more important role that results in the ultimate motivate to encourage ones to strike hard to get a good result.
In addition, another explanation for the word "emotion" is that it consists of facial expression plus various forms of body postures with subjective feelings that can be altered or largely influenced by the cultural background. Emotion opens the door for us to communicate with people and also serves as the adaptive response to adapt to the environment. Motivation is the aspect of selection in doing a task or completing a target, so there is much anticipation in what would eventually happen. For example, C likes to play football so much so that he could enter a football club to continue as a professional football player. Much has to be done before he enters a football club. He has to undergo constant training to sharpen his skill as a footballer. Some of the training would include shooting, tackling, stamina and running. Throughout these stressful and difficult going training, a lot of motivations actually come along to support C so that he would hold firm with his decision in pursuing his dream to become a professional footballer. This motivations can be in various form but self-determination holds a larger part of it so that no matter how hard the process is, he would eventually tackle all the unhappiness and obstacle so that he would achieve his target. Finally, the effort pays off when C is officially signed by XXX Football club and from this, we can see the amazing power of motivation and its effect in achieving something great.
The Next part of the lecture was about the experience of emotion. There are several components in emotion according to major theories of emotion. Among them are subjective feelings, cognitive appraisal, physiological arousal, motor expression and motivational tendencies. I would like to talk about the Cannon-Bard Theory proposed. They said that the internal or external stimuli lead to sensory impulses that are sent to the brain and then sensation of emotion is produced. Therefore, we can say that a stimulus lead to both body responses and emotional sensation. This is seen in people that would react to a specific stimulus and experience corresponding to the emotion simultaneously. For example, D is afraid of spider and therefore D experience fear whenever encountering a spider. This can actually be sorted out in 3 phases. The stimulus is the spider followed by the fear emotion generated by the brain after seeing the spider. As a result, reaction is running away from the stimulus. Next, the transfer of excitation was studied in the Riding an exercise bike by Zillman and a colleague. Half of the research participants were asked to ride an exercise bike until they were breathing heavily and their heart were pounding, whereas the other half were not. The participants were then get insulted. The result is that those riding were more aggressive than the others who were not. This explains the arousal of the riding bicycle that is transferred to the situation of being insulted, thus increasing the anger faced by the participants. Therefore, the theory of transfer of excitation is supported.
According to Lazarus hypothesis, when people are emotionally aroused, they would try to engage in coping process as an adaptation response. The coping process consists of thought and behavior in combination aims to reduce stress. There are 2 mechanisms for this, that are palliation and direct action. Palliation is a defensive process where one changes the reaction towards an emotional event. This is often accompanied by ignoring the negative events or ven by modifying the physiological reactions. For example, when the final examination is near, there would certainly be 2 extreme reactions among the students sitting for the examination. Some would try to convince themselves not to worry about the exam and stay calm and cool. This is the reaction of them to avoid being stressed out, thus they feel relax instead of being tensed by the examination that often leads to unhappiness, gloomy emotion. This type of response is a typical response of palliation. The others would probably busy studying harder due to the anxiety towards examination so that they can do well in it. This is called the response to emotion by taking a direct action.
In conclusion, I have learned about the close relationship between motivation and emotion. To my surprise, they can sometimes work like brothers but there are also times where they are 2 parallel lines that would not touch each others. This is interesting to me. A lot of theory of emotions that results from the studies mainly to find out the effects of emotion in several aspects have introduced me to a new field of emotion. I would continue to read more about it so that I would understand it better.
