Gabriel Tang Pei Yung, A131735 LJ05- emotion and personality

Thank you for reading my last journal (5th journal) for Pengurusan Emosi. The lecture this time is different compared to the previous lecture. In this lecture, we were asked to watch a video and relate it to the topic today which is emotion and personality. Besides that, we also required to undergo 2 tests to test on our personality.

What is emotion? Emotion is the complex psychophysiological experience of an individual's state of mind as interacting with biochemical (internal) and environmental (external) influences. While, personality is the particular combination of emotional, attitudinal, and behavioral response patterns of an individual. Why I suddenly want to discuss on the definition of emotion and personality? Because I want to relate it to the video I watched in the lecture on last Wednesday.

I really enjoyed and touched by this video. This video shows a person believed life is great and nothing will go wrong throughout the life but he started to think differently after he grew up. He found that not everyone willing to be his friend. He felt he was lonely and betrayed by his friends. Thus, he thought that he can't just trust anyone. He started to agree with what did his friend tell him--- In my eyes, love is fake and stupid. Previously I also have the same feeling. After I quarreled with my friends, I always think that I can't trust anyone because even your best friend will also betray you in the future. Human is selfish and greedy. Thus, no one is trustable… But at last, the singer in this video said he will keep his positive mind. He believed that no matter how bad things got there was always a light at the end of the tunnel. Even though his friend betrayed him, he will still find a new one. Even thought the beggar cheated him, he will keep being generous. From this video, I really saw a person with a strong positive minded personality and a strong believe that cannot be ruined by the emotion. He is good example for me.

After that, a video regarding type A personality and type B personality was shown. The following are type A personality behaviors.

a)      Eat quickly

b)      Wake up early

c)       Always in a hurry

d)      Impatient

e)      Organized

f)       Perfectionist

g)      Frequently check the clock

h)      Drive faster than normal

i)        Competitive

While the following are type B personality behaviors:

a)      Has calm activities

b)      Drives at speed limit or less

c)       Easy going

d)      Eat slowly

e)      Patient

f)       Does not rush and worry

g)      Relaxed

h)      Speak slowly

i)        Has a pleasant existent

Type B personality people are informal, self-confident, have a bland temperament, relaxed, calm, agreeable, and patient. Although they are equally motivated by type A personality people, they can achieve their goals without so much stress and in a calm way. Meanwhile, type A personality have an increase possibility of suffering heart diseases because of state of anxiety and high stress.

I think that I am type A personality person because I always rush to finish my work and feel tension all the time. Sometimes, I will feel impatient if some members in my project group cannot finish their works on time. I think I should be more relax and calm at the same time still be motivated by the environment.

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment is a psychometric questionnaire designed to measure psychological preferences in how people perceive the world and make decisions. We are either born with or develop with these types of behavior. There are 16 types of behavior. The 16 types are typically referred to by an abbreviation of four letters—the initial letters of each of their four type preferences (except in the case of intuition, which uses the abbreviation N to distinguish it from Introversion). For instance:

  • ESTJ: extraversion (E), sensing (S), thinking (T), judgment (J)
  • INFP: introversion (I), intuition (N), feeling (F), perception (P)

This test actually judges people in 3 main aspects which are attitudes (extraversion or introversion), functions (sensing or intuition and feeling or thinking) and lifestyle (judgment or perception). My test result is INTJ (introversion, intuition, thinking and judgment).According http://www.personalitypathways.com/type_inventory.html, the following are the explanation of my result.

The Introverted Thinking mind presumes logical order rules the Universe; illogic is dismissed as just so much mental clutter that needs to be swept out of the mind. Beliefs, understandings, and information is taken in and logically organized in clusters of thought, with principles at the foundation. It strives to fit new pieces of information into clusters of thought where it most logically fits. It sorts out and discriminates that which makes logical sense from that which does not. Like a detective, the Introverted Thinking mind is drawn to mysteries - seeking clues and root causes - to solve a problem or a riddle.

Introverted Intuition reflects on patterns, relationships, symbols, meanings, and perspectives on matters from complex phenomena to magical connections to practical problems. The Introverted Intuitive mind typically creates a unique vision and arrives at unique insights about things, phenomena, or people. It strives to discover the essence of things and fill in the missing pieces of a puzzle. Introverted Intuitive types frequently will have complex visions or perspectives that they are unable to explain with clarity to others.

After that, I undergone another personality test called Big Five Theory of Personality. This theory consists of five elements which are openness to experiences, extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness and neuroticism. Extroversion can be defined as a trait that shows social behaviors that can engage with other people. Agreeableness can be defined as trait that exhibits trustfulness, cooperative, friendly and easy going. Responsible, trustworthiness and dependability can be shown in conscientiousness. Neuroticism is shown when a person will become moody, distress, worry and upset easily, while openness can be defined as creativeness and artistic trait. After the test, I found that I am conscientiousness type. According to Friedman & Schustack, this type of person not likely to be a risk taker. They will calculate the decisions carefully to ensure safety.

In conclusion, I felt happy because I able to know my own personality at the end of the lecture. I strongly believe that these personality tests are very important because they can make you know yourself more. We will be able to know our weaknesses and strengths. Through this, we can improve ourselves in our weaker aspect. For example, I am type A personality person. Through this test, I know the weaknesses of type A personality and thus, I shall become more relax and calm when I am doing my job.
