Emosi

Salam sejahtera.
The lecture last week started off with dr. revising what have been thought for the previous session. I found it very useful for me because it helps me revise what had been taught and all those I have forgotten I can recall better now. I feel sad looking at some of my friends doing their own stuffs during the lecture, not paying attention to dr. I got a shocked when my name appeared on the screen indicating me as the one to present my learning from the lecture later. Luckily, dr said that was just a trial and I am really overjoyed. The feeling was like rising from the hell directly up to heaven. Since then, I paid more attention to the lecture afraid that my name shall appear again.
The quiz after the first half session was traumatizing. I and my friend squeezed our brain to answer the questions. We were satisfied with our answer which then turned into disappointment when we had numerous of them wrong. That's the overview of the lecture and the remaining parts were the lectures given by dr.
Honest speaking, I have little memory of what had been taught on FKP but I try to relate it. Physiological oriented theory mainly says that emotion is a product of brain and nervous system. The James-Lang Theory states that a stimulus can trigger emotion. It also says that the perception of bodily changes is the emotion. I agree with the first part but not the second part. A cockroarch can trigger fear. But it's the emotion that leads to the bodily changes instead of the perception of bodily changes causes emotion. Its like you see a bear, you feel afraid and run. If you see a bear, you do not run but you will still feel afraid. The Cannon-Bard Theory is similar to what I had explained earlier. Physiological responses come too late to cause the emotional response and human with nervous system surgically detached could still feel emotions.

Next is the PSYCHOBIOLOGICAL THEORY. Basic emotions are related to specific neural circuits. 4 basic emotions (fear, rage, panic and expectancy) interact to produce other emotions. Panksepp also suggests that specific neurochemicals may be associated with the various emotional command system. For example, Acetylcholine with the rage system. This system is not scientifically recognized as no specific location for emotion circuit and the circuits cannot serves as a basic for neurology of brain. Cognitive theories suggests that cognition or thought has a primary role in generating and guiding emotion. Under this theory, emotions are presented based on pass experience. This is misattributed because an emotion can arise from non-emotional cues. Transfer of excitation-arousal from one source may influence otherwise unrelated cognition and reactions. This basically means that emotion can influence one's thought and action. Psychoanalytic theories  hypothesised emotional experiences are unconscious processes.

Later of our class, we had a happy session dealing with the positive emotions: gembira, bahagia and kasih. Happiness is an emotional or affective state that is characterized by feelings of enjoyment, pleasure, and satisfaction. We had happy pictures and research on happiness. There are short and long term affective stress. When I heard that religious people are happier, I was interested in it. I feel that its because there is "someone" where you can share all your feelings, your worries and uncertainties. No man will be able to manage his life by himself, that's why we need friends, friends cannot be by our side every hour, so we need God. Our religion is what we can rely on and it gives us better life satisfactory. According to the statement, people of the same religion are as if sharing a same committee, where we have same belief, same thoughts, same spiritual habits. We experience a sense of acceptance and security in it. Love is more than just intense liking. This is so true. You may like someone but not loving him or her. So, love is even more than mere liking. It involves three factors: commitment, intimacy and passion.

In the video shown during the lecture, Sami Yusof-You came to me. It is under the category of religion song. But its applicable not only for Islam but for other religions and even free thinkers. In the song, he said that the god is with him throughout the darkest hour of his days, when he feel lost and lonely. Religion also serves as a guide to lead us how to walk our journey of life, what is correct and what should not be done. Every religion teaches love, which is one of our emotions learnt. We learn how to love ourselves, each other and our god. "for you I give my life, for you I sacrifice" this stanza portrays how great is the presence of a god, that one is willing to givw his life to glorify his name and make him known all over.

In another song, Try Not To Cry, it's a song full of encouragement. Whenever you are oppressed, do not cry, be strong, that's the message he tried to get to us. "I will stand by you", teaches us how we should show our concern and helps to those in despair and agony. We should care for them from the bottom of our hearts. This reminds me of the recent catastrophes in Japan where help comes from every part of the world. Even in Malaysia, in the campus of UKM, among us, the donation box is passed in the class, where we give what we have, with a grateful and sincere heart to our friends in Japan. It teaches us not to lose faith in whatever situation. You will get through it gradually. The faces of those suffering children, mothers, people touches my heart.  Where are we when they are suffering? What can we help? Nothing much can be done, wars continue, disasters would not just end like that, but as long as everyone try to contribute a little of us, we can make this world a better place.
